Frequently asked questions

See all FAQs
What is Laticrete Hydro Ban used for?

Hydro Ban is a single-component, self-curing liquid rubber membrane that forms a flexible, seamless waterproofing and crack isolation layer under tile and stone. Laticrete lists it for interior and exterior use, including shower pans, stalls and tub surrounds, bathrooms and laundries, kitchens, spas and hot tubs, pools and fountains, and terraces and balconies over unoccupied spaces. See the Hydro Ban membrane, 1 gal.

How much area does a pail of Hydro Ban cover?

Laticrete gives an approximate coverage of 50 sq ft (4.6 m²) for a 1 gal pail and 250 sq ft (23.2 m²) for a 5 gal pail. Choose the 1 gal or the 5 gal size.

How long do I wait before flood testing or tiling over Hydro Ban?

Hydro Ban goes on in two coats, and it changes from light sage green to a darker olive green when cured. Apply the second coat only once the first is fully cured. Flood test once the second coat is fully cured, with no light sage areas showing. Laticrete gives typical cure times of 2 hours at 70°F (21°C) or warmer and 50% relative humidity, and 24 hours at 50 to 69°F (10 to 21°C) and 70% relative humidity; cold or damp conditions take longer. Flood test before you install tile or stone.

Do I need fabric with Hydro Ban?

Not in the field, coves or corners: Laticrete says Hydro Ban does not need fabric there. For gaps of 1/8 in. (3 mm) or less, follow Laticrete's installation instructions in DS 663.5. The collection also includes Hydro Ban sealing tape and preformed corners.

What is Hydro Ban Board and where can I use it?

Hydro Ban Board is a lightweight panel with an extruded polystyrene core and a waterproof fleece membrane on both sides. It contains no cement, fibreglass or paper, cuts with a utility knife, and has a low perm rating for steam rooms and steam showers. FloorBox lists 36 x 60 in. sheets in 1/4, 1/2 and 2 in. thicknesses and a 1/2 in. 48 x 96 in. sheet: the 1/2 x 48 x 96 in. Hydro Ban Board.

Can I build a complete shower with Hydro Ban products?

Yes. Each Hydro Ban shower pan kit pairs a pre-sloped, ready-to-tile pan, which replaces a traditional mud bed, with a curb, Hydro Ban Adhesive & Sealant, sheet membrane, sealing tape, preformed corners, a pipe seal and a mixing valve seal. The drain kit is sold separately. See, for example, the 32 x 60 in. kit with center drain. Add a preformed niche or a preformed curb, or browse Laticrete shower bases and kits.
