Wall base and baseboards finish the joint where the floor meets the wall and protect the lower wall. Choose rubber or vinyl wall base, cove or toeless profiles, or MDF baseboards, then pick the height and profile that suit your wall, floor thickness, cleaning routine and look. Many flexible products need a compatible adhesive.

There's no single right height. Choose it by how much of the wall you want to protect, your floor thickness, how you clean and the look you want. Wall base comes in heights such as 2-1/2", 4", 4-1/4", 4-1/2" and 6". The Grandeur Modern MDF baseboard is 5-1/16" tall, and the Schluter DESIGNBASE-SL profile is 3-1/8" (80 mm). Need help choosing? What is the difference between cove (toe) and toeless wall base?
The difference is the toe at the bottom of the base, and product names show it. The Johnsonite Traditional Vinyl 4" coil is a TOE (cove) wall base, and DuraCove 2-1/2" toeless is a toeless base. Roppe's installation guide says a toe base can cover wall gaps up to 1/2" and a toeless base up to 1/4", and that backing down to the floor is preferred with toeless base.
Do I need adhesive to install rubber or vinyl wall base?
Usually, yes: many flexible rubber and vinyl wall base products need a compatible adhesive. Fusion 951 cove base adhesive is made for rubber, vinyl and carpet wall base, gives a 30-minute working time and is for interior use only. You'll find other options, including Mapei, Roberts, Henry and Chembond, in cove base adhesives.
Should I buy wall base in a coil or in precut lengths?
Both are available, so pick what suits your project. Coils come in 120 ft, like the Johnsonite Traditional Vinyl 4" coil, DuraCove and the M-D PRO RR400 rubber wall base. For precut lengths, Tarkett Millwork MW68 comes in 8 ft lengths, sold in packs of 8.
Which wall base works with tile floors or in spaces where hygiene matters?
The Schluter DESIGNBASE-SL is an anodized aluminium wall base profile, 3-1/8" (80 mm) high and 8' 2-1/2" long, made for tile and other floor coverings, with matching corners and end caps. Schluter also makes a brushed stainless option with a rounded base for commercial spaces where hygiene is a priority. It comes with a 5-year limited warranty.
Do you sell MDF baseboards for homes?
