Laminate flooring has become a popular choice as it is easy to clean, inexpensive and looks great! It has even started to replace hardwood floors in high-end homes as it can look just as luxurious. You can get laminate floors in many different styles and colors so that you can find the perfect flooring for your home.

These floor coverings are great for any spaces that don’t see a lot of moisture. So while they’re not suitable for bathrooms, you can use laminate flooring in bedrooms, hallways, dining areas and more!

Laminate Floor Materials
Laminate flooring is a type of hybrid covering for floors made with several layers. It is often referred to as laminate wood flooring because it mimics the look of wood and has a base layer of pressed wood particles. The image layer presents a well-rendered appearance of wooden flooring. This allows people to enjoy wooden aesthetics in their homes without paying a fortune for it.

  • Base Layer: The base layer consists of wood chips and particles that have been pressed under high amounts of pressure to form sheets. Since it consists of wood chips, this base layer is susceptible to water damage and must be kept dry.

  • Image Layer: The image layer consists of a highly accurate, high-quality photograph of real wood. This is what makes laminate flooring look so realistic.

  • Wear Layer: The top layer of laminate flooring is made of thin, durable plastic to ensure longevity. This plastic is transparent so that you can easily see the image layer. It is also scratch-resistant so it is perfect for homes with children and pets.

How Thick Should Laminate Floors Be?
Laminate flooring should be between 7 and 12 millimeters. If you find laminate thicker than this, it may feature some extra padding. You will usually see thickness variations of 7, 8, 10 and 12 mm and the price increases along with the thickness.

The thicker the laminate is, the more durable it will be. It will also have a more natural, wood-like feel walking on it.

Do You Need Underlay For Laminate Flooring?
It is important that laminate flooring is distributed evenly across a subfloor. So, you must put an underlayment down before laying your laminate. This helps to give stability and support, as well as reduces noise.

The type of underlay you need depends on the sublayer. For a wood sublayer, you can use standard underlayment. However, with cement, you need a vapour underlayment to prevent any moisture from seeping into your laminate floors.

What Is The Difference Between Laminate And Vinyl Flooring?
Laminate and vinyl flooring are very similar and can easily be confused. The major difference lies in the materials. Vinyl is completely synthetic. This makes it more durable and water-resistant so you can use it for your bathrooms and other damp areas.

On the other hand, laminate is made with wood. While it is less impervious to water, it is more natural-looking and comfortable to walk on because of its warmth and thickness.
