Laminate flooring is chosen for its wood look, floating installation and easy upkeep. Most planks click together: for example, Beaulieu Littora Loch uses the Välinge 5G Drop Lock system.
Laminate needs an even, supported base. Over a wood subfloor a standard underlayment works; over concrete, use a vapour underlayment unless the installation guide says otherwise. You must put an underlayment down unless the product has an attached underpad, and always follow the manufacturer's installation guide. Thickness varies by product, so check each floor's Specifications tab. For example, Fuzion FuzGuard Montana is 12 mm, while Beaulieu Littora Loch is 14.3 mm and comes with an attached underpad. Also compare the AC rating, water resistance and attached underpad, since these change from one product to the next.
Can I install laminate flooring in a basement or kitchen?
It depends on the product: for example, Fuzion FuzGuard Montana is rated for on, above or below grade, so basements are possible. For entrances, kitchens, basements and damp rooms, check the manufacturer's moisture limits; subfloor preparation and transitions remain essential. Over concrete, the Beaulieu Littora guide requires a vapour barrier, and it says not to install cabinets or kitchen islands on top of a floating floor.
Do I need an underlay under laminate flooring?
Yes, unless the product has an attached underpad: for example, Beaulieu Littora Loch has one, while Fuzion FuzGuard Montana does not and is used with FC1030. Over a wood subfloor a standard underlayment works; over concrete, you need a vapour barrier. The Littora guide notes that an attached underlayment does not count as a vapour barrier and calls for a 6-8 mil polyethylene film over concrete. Shop underlayments.
What does the AC rating on laminate flooring mean?
The AC rating is the durability rating shown in each laminate's specifications. On FloorBox product pages, AC4 is labelled General Commercial and AC5 is labelled Heavy Commercial. For example, Fuzion FuzGuard Montana is AC4 and Beaulieu Littora Loch is AC5. Ratings vary by product, so check the Specifications tab.
How many boxes of laminate flooring should I order for my room?
Measure the room's area, add 10% for cuts, corners, waste or future replacement, then divide by the coverage per box listed in the specifications. For example, a box of Beaulieu Littora Loch covers 15.30 sq ft and a box of Fuzion FuzGuard Montana covers 22.36 sq ft. The area calculator on each product page does this math for you.
Which mouldings do I need to finish a laminate floor?
FloorBox carries matching laminate mouldings and matching stair noses. The Beaulieu Littora guide calls for an expansion gap around the perimeter, suggests a T-moulding to avoid straddling a door jamb with a plank, and requires transition mouldings for runs over 45 ft (13.7 m) or separate rooms. Check your product's installation guide for the trims it requires.
