Frequently asked questions
See all FAQsHow do I choose knee pads for installing flooring?
Think about how long you kneel and what kind of work you do on your knees. The Proknee 0714 was designed for the flooring industry: its straps sit well below the knee, and its shin support spreads your weight along the shins instead of on the kneecap. For carpet installation, Crain Comfort Knees 197 protect you both for kneeling and for knee kicking, and they are machine-washable.
How do I find the right size of Proknee knee pads?
The Proknee 0714 comes in 18 lengths to match your shin length, two knee seat widths (standard and wide) and two cushion thicknesses (5/8" and 1"). For a more compact pad, the Proknee AP16 is one size fits all, with replaceable 5/8" or 1" urethane cushions. See all models on the Proknee brand page.
Will knee pads scratch or mark a new floor?
Not if you choose pads with a non-marring face. Troxell Super-Soft pads have a non-marring leather face, the leather front of the Gundlach Leatherhead XL will not mark or scratch floors, and Toolway neoprene leatherette pads are non-marking. Crain Comfort Knees 199 add a polyurethane skin that keeps splinters and other sharp debris from building up and scratching floors.
What can I use instead of knee pads for long jobs on the floor?
A rolling creeper or a kneeling board can take some of the load off your knees. The Racatac kneeling and sitting creeper comes with 2" casters or 3" casters, and a chest support attachment is available. The Kraft EZ-Kneeler has a 1-1/2" foam cushion on a 14" x 24" tray, and the Kuny's 301 kneeling mat (18" x 8") is made of NBR, which will not degrade with oil.
Can I replace the cushions or straps on my knee pads?
On some models, yes. The Proknee AP16 uses replaceable urethane cushions, the inner pad of Crain Comfort Knees can be replaced, and Barwalt Ultralight knee pads have replaceable straps, buttons and liners. FloorBox also carries replacement parts for several knee pad models.
